Cicero Davenport Franklin,
Private, Company H,
5th Florida Infantry Regiment CSA

My maternal 2nd great-granduncle, Cicero Davenport Franklin, served in Company H, 5th Florida Infantry Regiment of the Confederate Army.

One of his older half brothers, Francis Marion Franklin, and one of his older brothers, Leonidas W. Franklin, are also documented to have served in the Confederate Army.

Cicero Davenport Franklin's soldier's story is detailed below.

Cicero Davenport Franklin was born 1836 in Thomas or Baker County, Georgia. He was the second of four children born to Esom/Easom Davenport and Lydia Suzannah [nee Stafford] FRANKLIN. Eight older half siblings were born to Esom/Easom Davenport and Martha [nee TALBERT] FRANKLIN.

Cicero Davenport Franklin enlisted as a Private on 19 May 1862 at Rico's Bluff, Florida. He was mustered into Company H, 5th Florida Infantry Regiment on 19 May 1862. He served 4 1/3 months in the 5th Florida Infantry Regiment; 19 May 1862 to 29 Sept 1862.

Cicero Davenport Franklin died of fever / disease on 29 Sept 1862 at Knight's Factory Hospital in Lynchburg, Virginia. Lynchburg was the site of the second largest Confederate Military hospitals in Virginia; apparently, tobacco warehouses were converted to hospitals and hospital wards.

While Cicero Davenport Franklin was in service, the 5th Florida Infantry regiment participated in the following battles which had a direct impact on the course of the war and / or a decisive influence on a campaign:
  • Second Manassas, Virginia, 28-30 August 1862
  • South Mountain, Maryland, 14 Sept 1862
  • Antietam, Maryland, 16-18 Sept 1862

Cicero Davenport Franklin probably missed the battles in Maryland due to illness.

  • Notes
Cicero Davenport Franklin was my maternal half 2nd great-granduncle.

He is buried in Old City Cemetery, Lynchburg, Campbell County, Virginia; Lot 180, Grave 09
