My Army of Tennessee Ancestors |
Preparing for a road trip to several US National Park Service National Battlefield in Tennessee and Georgia, I researched family history to determine which of my ancestors had fought in this region. I found ten [10] ancestors whose regiments had been engaged in many of the significant battles of the Confederate Army of Tennessee in Tennessee, Georgia, and North Carolina. Seven [07] ancestors, Aaron R. Estes, Edward B. Estes, Henry Harrison HIGH, Matthew M. 'Mack' Norman, George W. Williams, Hardy Brooks Williams, and Leander M. Williams, served in regiments which participated in the campaigns from Chickamauga, Georgia, to Bentonville, North Carolina. Two died in service, Aaron R. Estes and George W. Williams. Another two [02] ancestors, James Robert "Jim" BOX and Andrew J. BOX, served in the 14th Texas [Dismounted] Cavalry regiment which participated in the campaigns from Murfreesboro [Stones River], Georgia, to Nashville, Tennessee, excepting a period in which it served in Gen. Joseph Johnston's Army of Relief of the Vicksburg Siege. Then, after the battle of Nashville, Tennessee, the regiment was dispatched to the defense of Mobile, Alabama. The tenth ancestor, Rufus Morgan High, served in a regiment which participated in the campaigns from Chickamauga, Georgia, to Atlanta, Georgia. After the Atlanta Campaign, the regiment was active in Tennessee and, then, Mississippi attached to the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. These Confederate Army of Tennessee soldiers are partitioned into Patrilineal and Matrilineal groups and, then, listed below alphabetically with service information and their relationship to me. |
