My patrilineal great-grandfather, James Robert Box, served in Company D, 14th Texas [Dismounted] Cavalry Regiment from 01 January 1862 to 11 May 1865. The 14th Texas [Dismounted] Cavalry was also known as: 1st Regiment Johnson's Brigade Texas Mounted Volunteers and, more simply, Johnson's Mounted Volunteers. James R. Box was born 28 July 1835 in Alabama and moved to Rusk County, Texas, in Dec1845 with his widowed mother and 5 siblings. [J.R. Box and 3 brothers served in Texas CSA regiments; the other brother served in the Texas State Troop (Militia or Home Guard)]. J.R. Box served with the 14th Texas [Dismounted] Cavalry in Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. A regiment history of the 14th Texas [Dismounted] Cavalry will be posted in future. The photographic image, on the left above, was reportedly made in Mobile, Alabama, in 1865 shortly before the Battle of Spanish Fort in which he was captured [the day before the surrender of General Robert E. Lee�s Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant]. The Roll of Prisoners of War indicated that Sergeant James R. Box, Company D, 14th Regiment, Texas Calvary, was captured at Spanish Fort, Alabama, 08 April 1865 received at Ship Island, Mississippi, 10 April 1865 transfer from Ship Island, Mississippi, to Vicksburg, Mississippi, 01 May 1865 paroled at Meridian, Mississippi, 11 May 1865. J.R. Box returned from the war and re-entered school, in Rusk County, where he met his future wife. He married Sarah Margret Elliott, daughter of Mary Ellen [nee Barbee] and Alpheus Elliott, in Rusk County, Texas, on 23 December 1866. They moved to Van Zandt County approximately 1870 and purchased a farm. They lived on the same farm until shortly before their deaths. James R. Box died 07 December 1915 in Wills Point, Van Zant County, Texas. He is buried Myrtle Springs Cemetery, Van Zandt County, Texas, with members of his family.
