Pvt. William L. Abbey; Co. A, 124th Illinois Infantry; died 03Aug1924, 84.8 years of age
New US Department of Veterans' Affairs 'American Civil War' marker. Set on 10 x 13 x 2.5 inch dimensioned stone footing, leveled, and plumbed. [ Dimension sandstone provided by Tribble Stone, Boulder, CO 80302. ] Alternative surnames 'Abby' :Historical Data Systems, Inc., Duxbury, MA 02331 William L. Abbey enlisted on 09Aug1862 as a Private at 22 years of age. He was mustered into Company A, 124th Illinois Infantry, on 10Sept1862. He served more than 34 months in Illinois 124th Infantry; Sept1862 to Aug1865. While William L. Abbey was in service, the ILL 124 INF was engaged in the following battles which had a direct impact on the course of the war and / or a decisive influence on a campaign: Abbey was mustered out at Vicksburg, Miss., 28July1865, and discharged at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois, on 15 Aug 1865. During the siege of Vicksburg, Miss., the Regiment was engage in assaults on 19May, 22June, and 25June including the assault call the "slaughter pen". The Regiment was ordered into the crater formed by the mine explosion, two companies at a time for half an hour, all day of 26Jun1863; lost 49 men were killed and wounded. Coincidentally, William L. Abbey and my great-grandfather, SGT. James R. Box, Company D, 14th Regiment, Texas Calvary, were opposing combatants in Sergeant James R. Box was captured in the battle of Spanish Fort.
