Corpl. James C. Lucas; Co. B, 6th Iowa Infantry; died 03Feb1880, ~39 years of age
Lower 01.5 inches, set on 10 x 12 x 1.5 inch dimensioned sandstone footing, leveled, and plumbed.[ Dimension sandstone provided by Tribble Stone, Boulder, CO 80302. ] Due to having initially been set too high and due to subsidence, the headstone was tilted [ pitched ] backward ~ 10 degrees and tilted [ rolled ] to the north ~08.5 degrees. James C. Lucas enlisted on 04Sept1861 as a Private at 20 years of age. JCL served more than 24 month in the IOWA 6 INF; Sept1861 to Oct1863. While James C. Lucas was in service, the 6th IOWA INF was engaged in the following battles which had a direct and decisive influence on a campaign and / or a direct impact on the course of the war During his service, JCL was and [The Union loss in the operations about Jackson,10-17July1863, was 129 killed, 762 wounded and 231 missing or captured. ] James C. Lucas was discharged for wounds on 24Oct1863 at St Louis, Mo. Coincidentally, James C. Lucas and my great-grand-father, Sergeant James R.
