Oscar F. A. Green enlisted as a Private in Company M , 1st Maine Cavalry, on 31Oct1861 at 19 years of age. He served more than 36 months in Company M, 1st Maine Cavalry; 31Oct1861 to 13Nov1864. While Oscar F. A. Green was in service, the 1st Maine Cavalry regiment was engaged in the following battles which had a direct impact on the course of the war and / or a decisive influence on a campaign: The 1st Maine Cavalry regiment shared the hardships and discomforts of Gen. Burnside's infamous "Mud March", 20 - 24Jan1863. Oscar F. A. Green was wounded 17Sept1864 at Blackwater Bridge, Petersburg, Va. Oscar F. A. Green was mustered out at Augusta, Me., on the 25Nov1864 at the expiration of his term of service. The Maine 1st Cavalry lost the greatest number killed in action of any Cavalry Regiment in the entire army: 15 Officers and 159 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded; 3 Officers and 341 Enlisted men died of disease, a total of 518.
