Ancestors Who Died in Service in the American Civil War |
Listed below are the names and some details of and ancestors who died in service during the American Civil war. Five ancestors died from disease. One ancestor was killed in action at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee. One ancestor died from wounds the day after the Battle of Jonesboro, Georgia. One ancestor died of an known cause [disease or wound], date, and location. Confederate Army Death Rate An estimated 260,000 Confederate soldiers died in service; ~ 32.5 % of the 750,000 to 850,000 men who served in the Confederate Army. Of these I have identified 27 ancestors who served in the Confederate Army. My Confederate ancestors were more fortunate than the Confederate Army; they achieved a higher survival rate. Six died in service; 22.2% compared to ~ 32.5 % for the total Confederate Army. Union Army Death Rate The percentage of Union solider that died in service is about one-half that the Confederate soldiers. I have identified only 03 ancestors, Richardson brothers, who served in the Union Army. Two of the three died of disease in November 1862, in the 9th month of their service, in the 8th Missouri State Militia Cavalry Regiment. Their brother, the other Union soldier, survived the war, emigrated to Oregon, and died there on 15 Aug 1908.
