Republic of Texas Citizen Ancestors |
Republic of Texas Citizens Citizens of the Republic of Texas are defined by The Sons of Republic of Texas organization as resident citizens of Texas prior to her merger with the United States of America on 19 February 1846. I have chosen to define Republic of Texas citizens as resident citizen of present-day Texas from to Eight of my direct ancestors qualify as citizens of the Republic of Texas. Thirty-three [33] once-removed ancestor also qualify. The direct ancestors are partitioned in patrilineal and matrilineal categories and, then, listed in family groups ordered by their arrival in present-day Texas. Some relevant biographical information is provided. The 33 once-removed ancestors [2nd or 3rd great grandaunts or granduncles] are listed as sibling of the direct ancestors. Biographical information will be provided in future. |

Some Biographical Information Regarding My Matrilineal Citizens of the Republic of Texas; the Lucy [nee RICHARDSON] and Hiram ESTES Family Group |
Hiram ESTES; 1797 - Nov 1854; Virginia - Texas
This is perplexing. Hiram ESTES and his two oldest sons, Hiram S. Estes and Aaron R. Estes, should have been assess the poll tax and, thus, should have been recorded on the poll tax list. a. One plausible explanation is that the family was in transit from Bowie to Navarro County. b. Alternatively, the family may have purposely avoided paying the tax to avoid the expense. c. Lastly, the poll tax record is stated to be partial; some entries were not transcribed due to the poor condition of the original documents. This explanation is weakened by the fact that there should have been three separate entries. Edward B. ESTES' birthplace is consistently reported as the Republic of Texas in numerous census, in the family Bible, in his Confederate pension application, and on his death certificate. |

Notes |
Note_01: Republic of Texas 1846 Poll Tax / Poll Tax List In 1846, a 'poll' tax of one dollar was assessed to every white male resident over the age of 21 and to women who were heads of households [usually widows] resident in the Republic of Texas. The 1846 poll list, compiled from the original tax rolls housed in the Texas State Archives, is the nearest thing to a complete census of the Republic of Texas. The Republic had an aggregate population of just under 150,000 at that point in time. The poll tax record is stated to be partial; some entries were not transcribed due to the poor condition of the original documents. The spelling of names was phonetically. |
