SAMUEL, HIGH A biographical sketch taken from Van Zandt County Texas Histories and Biographies - Volume II 1848 - 1991 Under the title [sub verbo]: 'SAMUEL, HIGH' The biographical sketch is credited to/was submitted by Phillip Gowins.
Transcriber's note: the compiler of this information, Phillip Gowins, addressed the fact that this data is in conflict with other High family researchers' work. Eg, Alf A. Allen's 1970 HIGH FAMILY HISTORY available on this site. Gowins' wrote: 'It should be noted that High family members of previous generations have sometimes alleged the parentage of Samuel to be one 'Henry High of Warren County, IND' who was a son of 'John High' of PA and NY. The original source of this information is not known but it is in error.'

Served as a self-indentured servant for four years in his early 30s, ~1630 - 1635; traveling from England to Barbados and finally the Virginia [Colony]. Settled near the town of Smithfield in Surry County, Virginia [Colony] in 1635.

Biographic Information	Moved with his parent's family to Greene County, Tennessee about 1820. Lived most of the first decade of after marriage in Parrottsville, Cocke County, Tennessee; the first four of their children were born there. Moved to Laconia, Fayette County, Tennessee about 1835; five of their children were born there. Owned a farm on the banks of the Hatchie River. In 1851, the family moved, along with the families of Freeman Hubbard and C.H. Bramley [Mrs. Bramley with the remarried, aforementioned, widow of the unnamed brother of Samuel High_2, to Van Zandt County, Texas, and founded the High Settlement. Samuel High was affectionately know as "Uncle Sammie" by most of the community and was a highly respected and influential man in the last half of the 1800s.
