Charles Alexander Murphy, Private, Company A, 2nd Mississippi Partisan Rangers Cavalry [Ballentine's] Regiment CSA

My maternal 2nd great-granduncle, Charles Alexander Murphy, served in Company A, 2nd Mississippi Partisan Rangers Cavalry [Ballentine's] Regiment. Charles A. Murphy's muster-in and muster-out dates are not currently known. His Confederate Service Record has been ordered from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. His older brothers Archibald Jasper Murphy and David Huston Murphy served in the 2nd Mississippi Infantry Battalion /48th Mississippi Infantry Regiment CSA. Charles Alexander Murphy's story is detailed below.

Charles Alexander Murphy was born 30 May 1839 in Florence, Alabama. He was the 12th of 14 children born to Archibald and Anna G. [nee THOMPSON] MURPHY. His father was born in Scotland on 12 Jan 1794 and immigrated to the USA before 1815. His mother was born on 20 Aug 1800 in Rutherford County, Tennessee Charles A. Murphy served in and survived the American Civil War. His muster in and out dates are not known at this time. Based on available information, he is believed to have served as a Private in Company A, 2nd Mississippi Partisan Rangers Cavalry [Ballentine's] Regiment. The 2nd Mississippi Partisan Rangers Cavalry Regiment was engaged in the following battles which had a direct impact on the course of the war and / or a decisive or observable influence on a campaign: Iuka, Miss., 19 Sept, 1862 Corinth, Miss., 03 - 04 Oct 1862 Thompson�s Station, Tenn., 05 Mar 1863 Meridian, Miss., 14 - 20 Feb 1864 Adairsville, Ga., 17 May 1864 Dallas, Ga., 28 MAY 1864 Columbia, Tenn., 24 Nov 1864 Spring Hill, Tenn., 29 Nov 1864 Franklin, Tenn., 30 Nov 1864 Nashville, Tenn., 15 - 16 Dec 1864 Selma, Ala., 02 April 1865 On 22 Feb 1865, the 2nd Mississippi Partisan Rangers Cavalry [Ballentine's] Regiment was consolildated with the 7th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment. C.A. Murphy is reported in the roster of both Company A, 2nd Mississippi Partisan Rangers Cavalry Regiment Company A, 7th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment Charles A. Murphy married Neoma B. GARNER on 28 Sep 1869 in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. Neoma was born in 1846 in Scott County, Mississippi. Neoma B. [nee Garner] and Charles A. Murphy had two children. In 1873, Charles A. Murphy died of a broken meck when he was knocked off the roof by a falling limb. He was re-roofing a house. His widow took his two children to her farm's farm in Scott County, Mississippi.
