He served more than 32 months in the 1st Indiana Cavalry; 01 Oct 1862 to 22 June 1865. While John D. Bates was in service, the 1st Indiana Cavalry regiment was engaged in the following battles that had a direct impact on the course of the war and / or a decisive influence on a campaign: John D. Bates was mustered out of the 1st Indiana Cavalry on 12 Sep 1864. Two headstones standing in Valley Brook Cemetery are inscribed John Bates CO. D 1 IND CAV The trooper associated with the headstone standing in Lot 157 is taken to be: John D. Bates, a resident of Evansville, Indiana, at his enlistment.
