Lewis Forster Hillard
Pvt. Lewis Forster Hillard; Company A, 27th Connecticut Infantry

Lewis Forster Hillard enlisted as a Private on 10 September 1862; his residence was given as New Haven CT. He was mustered into Company 'A' of the Connecticut 27th Infantry Regiment on 06 May 1861. He served nearly 10 months in the 27th Connecticut Infantry, 03 Oct 1862 to 27 July 1863.

While Lewis F. Hillard was in service, the 27th Connecticut Infantry regiment was engaged in the following battles that had a direct impact on the course of the war and / or a decisive influence on a campaign:
  • Fredericksburg_I [Marye's Heights], Va., 12-15 Dec 1862
  • Chancellorsville, Va., 01 - 05 May 1863
  • Gettysburg, Penn., 01-03 July 1863

    The 27th Connecticut Infantry regiment participated in Gen. Burnside's infamous "Mud March"; 20-24 January 1863.

    A colorfully incident is that after it organized the 27th Connecticut Infantry regiment was ordered to report at Washington, D. C. Reaching its destination on the morning of October 25th, it went into camp on Arlington Heights, in a peach orchard owned by General Robert E. Lee.

    Lewis F. Hillard was mustered out on 27 July 1863 at New Haven, CT.
