    The CWSSS database reveals two soldiers named 'John Bates' were enlisted in the 1st Indiana Cavalry:
  • John Lewis Bates with the rank 'Teamster or Wagoner' who was enlisted in Company D.
    and
  • John D. Bates with the rank 'Private' and then 'Corporal' who was enlisted in Company E and later transferred to Company B.

    Until other information is available, the two headstone are taken to be for these two soldiers despite the fact that both headstones are inscribed Company D.
