Resources for Niwot Cemetery Veterans Rosters

The resources for the development of the 'Niwot Cemetery Civil War Veterans Roster' are tabulated below.

The roster of 20th century Niwot Cemetery veterans was developed by walkabouts in the cemetery.

Other veterans' graves may be present with private [vis government furnished] headstones.

The US National Park Service Civil War Soldier System online database; an invaluable / impressive resource comprised of three parts:

  • Illinois State Archive Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls Database.
Historical Data Systems an online fully searchable database which contains extensive information regarding American Civil War soliders, regiments, and events. HDS is a subscription database [$25 per year] and is indispensible to the development of the 'Soldier's Story'.

Notes regarding Niwot Cemetery American Civil War Veterans
    Note Comment
    01
Jeptha Adair is not reported in the Colorado Veterans' Grave Registration.
The associate of the Jeptha Adair buried in Niwot Cemetery with the American Civil War veteran of the same name who served a 100 day enlistment in the 48th Iowa Infantry is based on the correlation / match of the Adair's:
  • nativity: Ohio
  • year of birth: 1846 or 1847
found in the HDS database, the 1885 Colorado State census, and the Niwot Cemetery records published by the Boulder Genealogical Society.
The uniqueness of the given name adds weight to the matches. Jephtha / Jephthah is a character in the Judo-Christian testament Book of Judges, Chapter 11.
  • 02
HDS databases reports 'Dufeld' as the surname.
    03
The CWSSS database reports 'Hanger' as an alternative surname.
    04
Both the CWSSS and HDS databases reports 'Ezekiel' as the given name. The inscription on the headstone reads 'Edw'd D.'. The birth date on the headstone is consistent with Pvt. Ezekiel age [28 years] when he was mustered in [22 March 1865] as reported by the State of Illinois 'Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls Database'.
    --
The Colorado Veterans' Grave Registration developed by the American Legion and the Work Projects Administration states that Jerome F. Gould buried in Niwot Cemetery was among the ranks of the 30th NY Infantry.
However, I suspect that the WPA investigator got this wrong.
Neither the CWSSS nor the HDS databases list 'Jerome F. Gould' among the ranks of the 30th NY Infantry. 'John B. Gould' is the nearest match and his birth date does not match with the Jerome F. Gould buried in Niwot Cemetery.
Further, Jerome F. Gould is not among the soldiers listed in Niwot Cemetery records found at the Boulder Public Library, Carnegie Branch Library for Local History.
