Veritable Museum Of History
The military headstones and markers provided by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs [ VA ] are distinctive / easily recognized and provide a starting point for historic investigation.There are ~ 161 military markers at Columbia Cemetery, as of an 01Dec01 count. Of these, The headstones provided by the VA to mark the graves of Union and Confederate Civil War and Spanish-American War dead are an easily recognized styles in which an image of a shield is undercut and the text is in bas-relief. These headstones were made from white marble and are nominal 10-12 inches in width, 4 inches in depth, with 20-22 inches in height [ exposed length ] Survey of the Columbia Cemetery military headstones has produced a tabular list of Civil War Veterans [ CWVs ] with their Units and Regiments names. Monument Conservation
Both professional and volunteer gravestone / headstone and monument conservation have been
underway at Columbia Cemetery since 1998. There is evidence of earlier professional and individual conservation.Reset Civil War Military Headstones
Since November 2001, a effort has been undertaken to reset sunken and tilted Civil War military headstone. The work is being performed utilizing professional monument conservation techniques and in accordance with standards of the 'Association for Gravestone Studies'.
