Owen Snider
Corporal Owen Snider, Co. A / L, 2nd Calif Cavalry; died 28Sept 1913; 83.8 years of age.
New US Department of Veterans' Affairs 'American Civil War' marker.
Set on 10 x 13 x 2 inch dimensioned stone footing, leveled, and plumbed.

Owen Snider enlisted as a Corporal on 26May1862 at 33 years of age at Aurora, Nebr. He was mustered into Company A , 02nd CALIF Cavalry on 20Jan1864. He later transferred to Company L on 22Oct1864, inter-regiment transfer.

Owen Snider served more than 36 months the 02nd CALIF Cavalry; 26May1862 to 11Jun1865. Albeit, inexplicably, only 17 months assigned to a company; 20Jan1864 to 11Jun1865.

Owen Snider was mustered out on 11Jun1865 at Fort Laramie, Dakota Territory.

While Owen Snider was in service, the 02nd CALIF Cavalry regiment served at
  • Fort Churchill, Nevada Territory,
  • Camp Douglass, Utah Territory,
  • Fort Bridger, Wyoming Territory
  • Fort Laramie, Dakota Territory
    protecting the Overland mail and California/Oregon emigrant routes and was engaged in numerous skirmishes with Native American Indians.
