Abijah Abernathy enlisted as a Private on 01 Aug 1862. He was mustered into Company C, 78th Indiana Infantry regiment on 01 Aug 1862. He served 02 months; 01 Aug 1862 to 03 Oct 1862. The 78th Indiana Infantry regiment was a 60 day enlistment. The regiment was employed on picket duty against guerrilla raids along the Kentucky border for the greater part of its term.
