John W. Atwood enlisted as a Private on 10 Nov 1861 at Quincy, California.

He transferred to Company C, 1st California Infantry Battalion on 30 Nov 1864.
The 1st California Infantry Battalion was organized during Nov and Dec 1864 by consolidation of the re-enlisted veterans and recruits whose terms had not expired of the 1st and the 5th California infantry regiments. except veterans reenlisted.

He transferred from Company C to Company E, 1st California Infantry Battalion date not given.

John W. Atwood served 36.5 months in the 5th California Infantry regiment and 21.5 months in the 1st California Infantry Battalion; 10 Nov 1861 to 30 Nov 1864 and 30 Nov 1864 to 15 Sept 1866, respectively.

The 5th California Infantry regiment assisted in driving the Confederate forces from Arizona and New Mexico to beyond the Rio Grande in the spring of 1862. The regiment then served by detachments at various posts in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, engaged in severe scouting and outpost duty, and in numerous skirmishes with hostile Indians.

Company F served at Fort Bowie and Camp Mimbres in Arizona and then participated in the expedition to southwest New Mexico, 23 July 23 - 10 Oct 1864.

John W. Atwood was mustered out on 15 Sept 1866 at Los Pinos, New Mexico.
