William A. Elliot enlisted on 19 Aug 1864 as a Private at age 22. He served a 100 day enlistment in the Colorado 3rd Cavalry regiment; 19 Aug 1864 to 30 Dec 1864.

While William A. Elliot was in service, the 3rd Colorado Cavalry regiment was engaged in the Sand Creek Massacre in which about 150 Cheyenne and Arapaho people, mainly women, children, and the elderly were killed. An infamous event in Colorado history.
