Sgt. Nathan Boyd Webb, Co. D, 1st Maine Cavalry; died 19 Apr 1891; 49 years of age.

Nathan B. Webb enlisted as a Private and was mustered into Company D, 01st Maine Cavalry, on 19Oct1861. He served more than 43.5 months; 19 Oct 1861 to 05 June 1865.

    The 1st Maine Cavalry regiment
  • shared the hardships and discomforts of Gen. Burnside's infamous "Mud March", 20-24 Jan 1863
    and
  • was present at the surrender of Gen. Lee and his army at Appomattox Court House 09 Apr 1865.

    However, Nathan B. Webb is known to have missed the Battle of Gettysburg, Penn., 01 - 03 July 1863 because he was one of six 1st Maine Cavalry troopers captured at the Battle of Aldie, Va., 17 June 1863, imprisoned, and exchanged [date not give].

    Further, Nathan B. Webb was wounded at the Battle of Deep Bottom, Va., 16 Aug 1864, and hospitalized in Pennsylvania. Depending on the severity of his wound(s) he may not have returned to active service.

    Nathan B. Webb was:
  • captured at the Battle of Aldie, Va., 17 June 1863, imprisonment, and exchange [date not give].
  • wounded at the Battle of Deep Bottom, Va, 16 Aug 1864
  • promoted to Sergeant in 1864

    Nathan B. Webb was discharged on 05 June 1865.

    On June 9, 1863 the First Maine Cavalry participated in the Battle of Brandy Station, the first battle in the Gettysburg campaign and the largest cavalry battle ever fought on American soil with about 22,000 mounted participants gloriously charging their foe with drawn sabers.

    The 1st Maine Cavalry fought in more battles than any other organization in the Army of the Potomac and sustained the highest losses in battle of any Cavalry Regiment in the Civil War: 15 officers and 159 enlisted men were killed or mortally wounded in battle.
    In addition, 3 officers and 341 enlisted men died of disease.
    In all, the First Maine Cavalry lost 518 soldiers.
    Another 145 men died in Confederate prisons.
