    The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal / service / patriotic organization for Union veterans of the American Civil war. The GAR was formed to facilitate camaraderie among veterans and worked, by applying organized political pressure, to ensure that the Union veterans and their widows and orphans received the pensions promised by the federal government. The first post was organized and chartered in Decatur, Illinois, on April 6, 1866.

    The Boulder, Colorado, GAR Post [chapter] was mustered-in on 09 April 1881. The post was [ultimately] designated Nathaniel Lyon Post No. 5, Grand Army of the Republic, Department of Colorado and Wyoming. The Post was active in Boulder from 1881 to 1940.

    There were a total of 410 members; the largest number of active member at any one time was 125 members; 100 members were typical from its inception into the 1910's.
    In 1935, the Post was reduced in ranks to six members and the Post met irregular 'on account of the physical disability of . . . members'. The last meeting record in the Post minutes in 10 December 1935 was attended by the remaining three members, Comrades Bryan, Means, Weed.

    Two members, Bryan and Means, of the Post attended the government sponsored 'Blue and Gray Reunion of the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg', 29 June - 05 July 1938. Thomas D. Means died on 21 September 1939 at a naval hospital in San Diego, Calif. The last public appearance of the Nathaniel Lyon Post was on Memorial Day, 1939.

    The written historic record of the Post concluded when the two surviving members, Robert T. Byran and John Weed, sign their names to the final pages of the Post's history on 12 May 1940 .

    Note 1:
    A number of GAR posts nation-wide were named for Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon. His death at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri, on August 10, 1861, made him the first Union general to die on the field of battle during the American Civil War.

    Note 2:
    The date, 09 April 1881, is auspicious. 09 April 1865 was the date that Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered the CSA Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrendered the Confederate Army of Tennessee on 03 May 1865 at Benton Place near Durham, North Carolina, ending the war east of the Mississippi.

    Note 3:
    The Boulder Post was initial designated Post No. 13, Department of the Mountains. In 1882, the GAR reorganized the western departments and the Boulder chapter was renamed the Nathaniel Lyon Post No. 5, Department of Colorado and Wyoming.
